Here are a few basic facts about suri alpacas:
- Suri Alpacas are members of the camelid (or camel) family. They are mild tempered, herd animals with an inquisitive nature.
- Suri alpacas have unique fiber characteristics that distinguish them from the rest of the camelid family. Unlike the Huacaya alpaca, which has a soft, fuzzy look, the Suri has long, separate, distinctive locks comprised of twisted or flat fibers that drape down the sides of the alpacas body. The Suri's fleece has a cool, slick feel; is as soft as cashmere; warmer and stronger than wool; and has the luster of silk. Alpaca fiber is virtually itchless and easy to dye.
- Suri alpaca fiber blends well with wool and other fine fibers such as silk. The yarn can be knitted, crocheted, woven, or felted.
- Suri alpacas are "easy on the land" as they have padded feet. It costs less than one dollar a day to adequately feed an alpaca.
- Suri alpacas are rare. Of the total alpaca population in the U.S., Suri's represent only about 17%.
Suri alpacas would be an excellent addition to your farm. They offer business and "just plain fun" opportunities. You can raise breeding stock, offer stud services, or just enjoy them as pets and "harvest" the luxurious fleece each year. The opportunities are endless!
